7 Strange Food Combinations Only People In Illinois Will Love
If you grew up in Illinois, you may eat some things that the rest of the country finds odd or even disgusting. These strange food combinations are just part of our way of life, and we love our state more for them. From sweet to salty, these eats can’t be beat.
True Illinoisans have tried all of these. What about you? Scroll on for seven things we eat all the time in Illinois.
1. Spaghetti on pizza.
2. Fried eggs on burgers.
Adapted by many burger places around the state, this unique combo is better than it sounds. The added texture of the egg takes it to a whole new level.
3. Caramel and Cheddar popcorn.
Most out-of-staters certainly sneer when they hear about this, but it's actually genius. This sweet and salty combination is like heaven in your mouth. It's easy to get addicted to this stuff.
4. Cheese and fries piled on meat.
Typically using a burger patty, the traditional horseshoe sandwich begins with a slice of toast and is finished with homemade cheese sauce. It is an open-faced delicacy that Illinois is known for but also one of the oddest food combinations for a full meal.
5. Apple cider donuts.
Whoever discovered that you could pour apple cider into the donut dough was a genius. This is one of the most delicious food combinations for fall in Illinois. Stock up on them at your local orchard when the season is right.
6. Chocolate, strawberry, postachio, and vanilla ice cream with cherries and walnuts topped with orange sherbet.
This Chicago classic is called a Rainbow cone, and it's one of the most complex flavor combinations we enjoy. When you can't choose just one flavor, this cone has your back.
7. Hot dogs topped with "garden" picks.
A classic Chicago hot dog is a strange thing to anyone who doesn't live in Illinois. These popular franks are topped with a pickle spear, celery salt, tomato slices, sweet pickle relish, pickled sport peppers, chopped onions, and of course, mustard.
