Maeystown is a tiny historic village in Monroe County with a population of less than150 residents. Its roots date back to the mid-1800s when German immigrants settled here. Eventually, a post office, a mill, houses, and a general store were built to support the community. Today, you can visit this charming village where it seems as though time stands still. You can even spend the night at the Corner George Inn, a historic bed and breakfast in Illinois.
The building that houses the Corner George Inn Bed & Breakfast has quite the history. Built in 1884 as a hotel and saloon, it was then transformed into a home and general store around the turn of the century.
In 1989, it became the bed and breakfast it's known as today after an 18-month restoration project by owners David and Marcia Braswell.
The Corner George Inn actually occupies four buildings. In addition to the original building, there are two rock houses and a summer kitchen with a total of six guest rooms on the property.
Located in one of the rock houses, circa 1862, the Dave and Mayme's Whirlpool Suite provides plenty of space and is perfect for an extended stay.
There are a total of four rooms in this suite: a living room, a kitchen, a bedroom with a comfortable queen bed, and a bathroom featuring a clawfoot tub. You'll also have access to a patio out back.
The Summer Kitchen Guest Cottage was, at one time, a washhouse, a smokehouse, a bakery, a storage room, and a kitchen. A stay in this historic room will make you feel as though you've been transported back in time as you enjoy the cathedral ceiling, lantern lighting, a clawfoot tub, and a pedestal sink.
In the inn's main building, the Roever Room is located on the first floor and features antique furnishings and a private bath with a clawfoot tub, shower, and pedestal sink.
Staying at the Corner George Inn Bed & Breakfast is quite a wonderful experience and allows you to really explore Maeystown, one of the few Illinois villages on the National Register of Historic Places.
