Mound City, Illinois has a fascinating cultural history. The city was given its name by Ohio pioneers in the mid-1800s because the area contained a large number of Indigenous Peoples' burial mounds. It appears this area was a regionally significant burial site for Indigenous People in the area dating back more than a thousand years. There is a historic home in Illinois that sits above the entire town built atop one such raised section of the earth believed to be a former burial site - the Wall Manor.
This masterpiece of classic revival, Romanesque, and Victorian architecture stands as a focal point of the city.
The home was designed by Chicago architect S. B Prindle in 1910. Construction lasted until 1913 when the home was presented to the honorable judge Warner A. Wall and his family. The home remained in their family until the early 2000s.
The beautiful veranda floor was constructed of handcrafted inlaid tile. The intricate, delicate pattern shows even today how much love went into the construction.
As you enter the home, the elegance and attention to detail are evident. Yet it still has that inviting feeling of a well-loved home that contains many happy memories.
The dining room is an explosion of patterns, texture, and light that takes you back to the Victorian era when members of high society were entertained over the comfort of a meal with friends and family.
Tours of Wall Manor are available Saturday and Sunday afternoons from noon to four. There is a small per-person fee for anyone 10 and older. Group tours can be arranged on weekdays by calling ahead.
Not only can you enjoy a tour of this historic Manor, but there are also rooms available for guests to rent.
Imagine stepping back in time and staying in this luxurious master bedroom. Pack your intricate Victorian gown or your tuxedo with tails and enjoy a weekend getaway in this historic manor.
The South Bedroom is equally opulent with a richly patterned rug, intricate hand-carved wood mantel, and luxurious fabrics that sweep you off your feet with old-world charm.
The historic Civil War-era town of Mound City is a charming destination for history lovers or anyone who wants to step back in time to the Victorian age.
