Driving just south of Rexburg, you’ll pass a whole lot of country and the occasional farmhouse or two. However, it’s in this rural area that you’ll also come across a historic general store that’s been around for nearly 130 years! The historic store has gone through a lot of changes over the years, but it most recently became the White Sparrow Country Store and it’s the one place in Idaho that you can get your hands on Southern fried pies. The White Sparrow Country Store is the newest iteration of a historic general store located just south of Rexburg. The store opened its doors in August 2020, and they've already gotten locals hooked on their one-of-a-kind southern delights.
The historic building was purchased by local couple Richard “Bud” and Bree Mason nearly two years ago, and a LOT of changes went into making it the beautiful destination you see today. Walking into the store, you can't help but be immediately charmed by the blending of vintage and modern decor.
White Sparrow may be new, but the store itself is an icon in eastern Idaho. The building dates back to 1892 when it was owned by some of the area's first white settlers, George and Sarah Briggs. Many locals remember it as the Lloyds General Store, which was a popular community gathering spot for 24 years.
The new owners are dedicated to honoring the building's history while also bringing something new to the community: Southern-fried pies. This delicious item is best described as a Southern-style empanada - basically, a handheld pastry that comes in both sweet and savory variations.
With over two dozen flavors to choose from, there's bound to be one that calls to you! Having trouble deciding? The store's top sellers, Strawberry Nutella and the Farmer's Pie (chicken pot pie), never disappoint. Each pie is handcrafted and you can taste the love in every bite.
The store also boasts a fantastic ice cream selection. They use local Reed's Dairy square-served ice cream and offer popular flavors like Huckleberry, Chocolate Moose, Pralines and Cream, and Blueberry Cheesecake.
