With 31 scenic byways in Idaho, there are opportunities for gorgeous drives all around the state. One of these drives, which is beautiful around every single turn, is the St. Joe River Scenic Byway in northern Idaho. As you explore this route, you’ll enjoy river and forest views, may spot some wildlife, and can even spend some time in St. Maries, one of the most charming small towns in the panhandle. This is one of my favorite scenic drives in Idaho and I love recommending the route. As soon as you begin this drive, you’ll understand why.
The St. Joe River Scenic Byway is approximately 90 miles one way. It’s perfect for an afternoon adventure or even a day trip if you wish to make several stops along your way. You will follow the beautiful St. Joe River the entire way.
For this scenic drive, you’ll begin at the junction of Idaho 3 and Forest Highway 40 in St. Maries. You will follow the St. Joe River for approximately 75 miles and then at the junction with Road 218, you will turn left and climb 14 miles to the Idaho-Montana border.
St. Maries is a small town with approximately 2,500 residents. This town is an outdoor lover's paradise as it is tucked away in a valley filled with rivers and lakes. But of course, the St. Joe River is the most popular with exceptional fishing, floating, and even whitewater rafting opportunities.
Camping opportunities are abundant in the area with campgrounds located in nearby Heyburn State Park, the St. Joe River Area, and the Upper St. Joe Area.
If you have some time, plan a visit to Emerald Creek Garnet Area. This is one of only two places in the entire world where you can find Star Garnets, Idaho’s official state gem.
This area has been developed by the U.S. Forest Service and is where you can collect these gems. Reservations are required.
St. Maries, Idaho is one small town that is beautiful in every way and well worth a visit. It’s the perfect addition to the St. Joe River Scenic Byway, a bucket-list-worthy drive in northern Idaho.
