Idaho is beautiful in every season, from the vibrancy of spring to the frostiness of winter. However, there's something about exploring our state during autumn that makes for an extra special outing. After all, it's during this time of year that the scenery takes on brilliant hues, the likes of which look like something straight from a painting. Check out one of Idaho's most picturesque spots this fall from the iconic Rainbow Bridge on Highway 55. Boasting a delightful view of the surrounding fall colors, a visit to this bridge is bound to leave you in awe.
Located along Highway 55 just above Smith's Ferry, the Rainbow Bridge is one of Idaho's most notable bridges. It's well-known as a historic engineering achievement, but it also boasts some of the most spectacular autumnal scenery the state has to offer.
Rainbow Bridge, also called the North Fork Payette River Bridge, was initially constructed in 1933. The 410-foot-long concrete arch bridge is definitely a beauty, and it's surrounded by some seriously amazing forest landscape.
At the time of its construction, the bridge was noted for its "conscious effort to maintain the picturesque natural setting". We have to say we definitely agree with that! The bridge is a favorite among photographers for this very reason.
Additionally, the open-spandrel design is quite unique and only used in a few other locations throughout Idaho. Unlike those other destinations, though, Rainbow Bridge has never been altered and—believe it or not—it's the same exact bridge it was back in 1933.
During this time of year, you'll witness the bridge surrounded by shades of gold and yellow. It's a positively magical sight. The addition of the Payette River cascading below just completes the picturesque scene.
After seeing it for yourself, you'll quickly understand why Rainbow Bridge is a beloved section for those who frequently travel along Highway 55. It's not very often you get treated to such a pretty sight! The narrow highway makes walking across the bridge quite dangerous, so keep in mind it's best to view this beauty from afar.
The fall scenery can't be beat, but during the summertime you'll often spot rafters and kayakers floating underneath the historic bridge. The Payette River is a favorite among river rats, and we can see why with epic scenery like this!
