Finding a hike that appeals to the whole family can be a daunting task, but those of us in the Gem State are lucky to have access to all types of fantastic trails to choose from. When it comes down to it, though, nothing beats a family waterfall hike. Phantom Falls is far from the largest or most popular waterfall in the state, but it’s definitely still a sight to see! Best of all, the act of finding it is an awesome way to spend the day in the great outdoors with your loved ones.
Spend the day finding a beautiful hidden waterfall near Oakley, Idaho when you embark on the trail to Phantom Falls. The waterfall at the end is obviously the main highlight, but finding it is an exciting adventure in itself!
To get to the trailhead from Oakley, take South Goose Creek Rd West towards Oakley Reservoir. You'll eventually come upon a fork in the road. Stay right on Dam Dr. before taking a right on Trapper Creek Rd, then a left on Forest Service Rd 533. The trailhead can be found after 15 miles.
The trailhead's parking lot is located on the north side of the road, but the trail itself can be found on the south side. A substantial sign marks the beginning of the trail and is pretty easy to spot.
From here, you'll follow the trail through vibrant hills and lush foliage. Keep in mind that there is little to no shade on the trail, so you'll want to come prepared with plenty of water and appropriate attire for being in the sun.
Phantom Falls can be found at the end of the trail, approximately a mile and a half from the trailhead. Dropping 65-feet over the side of a cliff, it's a surprisingly impressive sight. Spring and summer is when the waterfall's flow is strongest, but it's known to keep flowing in winter.
Finding Phantom Falls feels a lot like stumbling across a hidden oasis. The cliff provides some much-needed shade and nothing feels better than dipping your feet in the waterfall's pool on a hot summer day. Bring a picnic, sit, and relax before heading back the way you came.
