If there's one thing we know, it's that Idaho's landscape is vast and varied. Towering mountains and glittering lakes, sagebrush desert, and rugged canyons - the Gem State has it all. Featured here is a particularly jaw-dropping destination that shows just how unique our state is. Balanced Rock Park is home to incredible rock formations, including its namesake which is truly unlike anything else in all of Idaho.
Located just south of Buhl in the Salmon Falls Creek Canyon is a unique little park that's home to an astonishing natural wonder. Balanced Rock Park in Idaho is the type of destination that you simply have to see to believe.
Perhaps you've seen photos of it - after all, it's one of the most photographed landmarks in the state. However, nothing beats seeing the jaw-dropping Balanced Rock up close! Seeing it firsthand really puts this natural wonder into perspective.
At over 48-feet-tall and weighing 40 tons, the wind-carved Balanced Rock dominates the Southern Idaho scenery. The formation gets its name from the fact that it seems to be precariously balanced on a pedestal only 3-feet by 17-inches.
Balanced Rock looks like it could topple over at any moment, and it makes for a truly one-of-a-kind photo op. It's just a short scramble to the base of the rock and standing next to it, you can truly appreciate the sheer size of this geologic marvel.
It's amazing to think that Balanced Rock is the product of millions of years worth of erosion. Made out of the same type of rock that forms parts of Jarbidge Canyon and Bruneau Canyon, it's the ultimate work of art by Mother Nature.
Surrounding Balanced Rock is a small park that's well-shaded and delightfully quiet. It's home to a few picnic tables and shelters, along with some primitive campsites for self-support camping.
Seeing this unique wonder with your own eyes is a must! To find the park from Buhl, take Main Street and turn right on Burley Ave., then turn left on Castleford Road. Continue for four miles and keep right onto E 3700. Follow the signs and park at the base of the rock to start the climb to the top.
