Wassaw Island is one of the Sea Islands located off the coast of Georgia.
The nearest city is Montgomery, Georgia, and the island is accessible only by boat.
The island is part of the Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1969, and includes seven miles of undeveloped, pristine beaches.
Explore 20 miles of dirt trails where you can hike and bike. Fishing is allowed in the saltwater estuaries adjacent to the refuge, though not in the freshwater ponds.
Look for seashells and sand dollars as you walk along the beach. Other wildlife to observe here includes alligators, turtles, and a variety of birds.
Ruins of Fort Morgan, built in 1898 as part of the Spanish-American War, are visible at the northern end of Wassaw Beach.
If you are cruising to the island in your own boat, you can launch near Savannah from the marina on Skidaway Island, Isle of Hope, or the public launch near the Skidaway Island Bridge.
Upon arrival at Wassaw Island, passengers can get off the boat at the dock on Wassaw Creek. Anchor your boat at the north or south end of the island.
Perhaps you will catch the beginnings of a stunning sunset during your visit.
Overnight visits and camping are not permitted on the island, and your pup will need to stay home this time.
Visit Wassaw Island during daylight hours seven days a week to experience the relaxation and quiet beauty on this barrier island in Georgia.
Please note that drinking water and restrooms are not available on the island.
