Savannah is a beautiful and historic city, and it also happens to be quite the foodie destination. The Hostess City plays host to countless famous restaurants that attract locals and tourists alike. One of the city’s most popular restaurants is Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room. This place has been around for practically forever and is a must-visit for anyone who loves food and wants a taste of the Peach State. It’s no surprise, then, that it’s attracted countless celebrities over the years. Actors, politicians, everyday regular joes, and tourists from all over the globe have dined at this iconic eatery that’s one of the most famous restaurants in Georgia.
Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room has been family-owned since it opened up in 1943. The founder, Mrs. Wilkes, passed away in 2002, but her memory lives on with the tasty recipes that are prepared here daily.
The restaurant is a bit unusual in that it's got 10 tables and people sit communally. There's no better way to meet a new friend than to sit together at a table with strangers and pass home-cooked meals around.
A number of celebrities have dined here over the years. Gregory Peck, Gwenyth Paltrow, Meg Ryan, Walter Cronkite, Ryan Reynolds, and even President Barack Obama have all had a meal here.
Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room opens promptly at 11:00 a.m., but if you wait until then to arrive, the line will likely be around the building. It's best to line up by 10:00 or so.
Despite the famous names that have dined here, it's still a down-to-earth experience that feels like a family reunion!
