However, if you have only a day to spend in Brunswick, three historic landmarks are absolute must-sees.
1. St. Simon's Lighthouse Museum
Built in the years after the Civil War, St. Simon’s Lighthouse and the historic keeper’s quarters have been a Brunswick-area landmark for more than 150 years.
Come for the lighthouse, but stay for the museum!
After you’ve toured the lighthouse and grounds, be sure to spend some time in the museum to learn more about the history of St. Simon’s light and coastal Georgia.
2. Lover's Oak
Botanists and historians estimate that Brunswick’s famous Lover’s Oak is more than 900 years old. Legend has it that Native American lovers met beneath the sprawling tree’s substantial branches. Today, you, too, can steal a kiss or two in the oak tree's shade.
3. Fort Frederica National Monument
James Oglethorpe - one of the Georgia colony’s founders - built Fort Frederica to protect the then-British colony against raids from Spanish forces. Construction began in 1734, but the fort wasn’t completed until 1748.
Fort Frederica offers both nature and history.
Today, the original fort is mostly just ruins. Nevertheless, visitors will find plenty to enjoy in the natural beauty and historical importance of the site. Some structures have been rebuilt to demonstrate how the fort may once have appeared.
