What minerals can be found in Georgia?

Georgia is a beautiful state filled seemingly to the brim with beautiful minerals to be mined or sought after:

  • Quartz is the most commonly found mineral in GA, and it has more than any other state (and other states have a lot). It’s so abundant that it was made into the official state gemstone!
  • You’ll also find amethyst, which is a variation of quartz that’s a gorgeous purple color, rose quartz, and smoky quartz.
  • Clear quartz is often found as well.
  • In northern Georgia, you’ll find occasional diamonds, lots of quartz, rubies, garnets, emeralds, and sapphires, too.

Where can I go rockhounding in GA?

Though it is illegal (and unethical) to go rockhounding in any of the state parks in Georgia, there are often designated areas and spaces within those parks where you are permitted to do so. Private mines also sometimes have this option. First and foremost, you’ll want to check out creek beds and river banks, where you’ll find all sorts of things washed up and exposed, or even polished, by the running water. Check out any and all mining dumps you can find, and be sure to visit our awesome pay-to-dig mines when they’re open. We like:

There are many more, but these options are all excellent starts! We suggest embarking upon a camping trip in Georgia near one of these locations for the ultimate experience!
