In a state with as much culinary creativity as Virginia, it's not difficult to come by a good burger. Locally sourced with some extra special toppings, this classic order won't disappoint you around here. And even so, there are some restaurants that go above and beyond in the burger category. So if you consider yourself a true burger lover, you owe it to yourself to make your way through this mouthwatering list.
1. Texas Tavern (Roanoke)
Texas Tavern opened its doors in 1930s, and has been serving up some unbeatable burgers ever since. The great-grandson of the original owner runs the place today. Photographed above is the ever-popular "Cheesy Western," which comes with melted cheese, fried onions, and sweet relish. If you're looking for an all-around great meal, these authentic burgers cut straight to the chase.
2. Holy Cow (Alexandria)
Not only are the Holy Cow burgers to die for, they're also a business that gives back. 25 cents of every purchase goes towards your charity of choice. Photographed above is the aptly named Hot Mess burger complete with homemade garlic fries. The messier the better when it comes to this spot.
3. Shelton's Big Grill (Virginia Beach)
When most people talk about Shelton's Big Grill in Virginia Beach, they're raving about the breakfast. But this also happens to be one of the best burger joints in town. Choices such as the Zombie Burger will provide you with two quarter-pounders topped with chili and a pile of french fries. Pictured above is the Knick Knack Paddy Wack burger and slaw.
4. Burger Bach (Richmond)
You don't have to be suffering the effects of a long night of partying to appreciate Burger Bach's "Hangover Cure" burger. The patties here are made from New Zealand beef, and the concoction featured above also comes with bacon, a fried egg, American cheese, caramelized onion, and green chili sauce.
5. Cuban Burger (Harrisonburg)
It would be quite a feat to leave Harrisonburg's Cuban Burger with even the slightest bit of hunger. This local favorite serves up dishes such as the "El Vaquero" burger, which combines ground beef and pork shoulder into a delicious patty before topping it with the works: flank steak, swiss cheese, fried onions, and special sauce.
6. Citizen Burger Bar (Charlottesville or Arlington)
There's no question that Citizen Burger Bar knows exactly how to prepare locally sourced meat and produce into fantastic burger concoctions. As you can tell by the above photograph, this spot is always well-populated and it's no secret why. The price may be a little steeper than the average burger, but rest assured that these are no average burgers. And if you factor in the mouthwatering truffle fries, you'll get plenty of bang for your buck.
7. Burger Bar (Bristol)
Established in 1942, Burger Bar has been a local favorite and staple in southwestern Virginia. According to legend, this is actually the place that country singer Hank Williams was last seen alive. And the food here is arguably just as notorious. In addition to the "Burger Challenge" photographed above, visitors can also enjoy a burger with grilled cheese sandwiches as buns.
8. Northern Neck Burger Co. (Kilmarnock)
In 2015, Virginia Living Magazine deemed Northern Neck Burger Co. the best in the state. These wood-grilled burgers have a deliciously unique flavor and are prepared to perfection. One of the most popular options is the Porch Burger, which is prepared in a red wine reduction with brie and apple chutney.
9. Pok-E-Joe's (Lynchburg)
Pok-E-Joe's is a beloved BBQ spot in Lynchburg that also serves up a mean burger. In fact, diners can choose from over 23 burger options, including the Southwest turkey burger, Hawaiian burger, or "The Bull," which offers two pounds of delicious angus beef with all the works.
