1. Excell Grocery & BBQ
Don't be fooled by the unassuming exterior of this gas station; what awaits inside is some of the most mouthwatering barbecue in the state. Pulling into the Excell Market parking lot, you wouldn't guess the building before you served award-winning barbecue. That's what makes this hidden gem of a destination so great. Inside, you'll find a modest set up of 16 dining tables. Yet this operation can serve up to 7,000 pounds of meat during its busiest weeks in the summer. The meat is hand-pulled and smoked over charcoal and hickory wood. It just doesn't get much more authentic than that. Address: 3102 Ashland City Road, Clarksville, TN, 37043.
2. Reggie's BBQ
The next stop on our list can be easily accessed from Exit 11 along Interstate 24. Reggie's BBQ is a newer barbecue joint in the Clarksville area, but it's no less impressive than other stops on this route. This delicious eatery saw its beginnings as a food truck in 2003. Today, Reggie's BBQ serves all different styles of the cuisine, although the pulled pork is decidedly North Carolina-style. If it's your first visit, be sure to try an order of the pulled pork loaded fries or a classic combo as shown above. Address: 3863 B Trenton Road, Clarksville, TN, 37040.
3. Fox's BBQ
Just around the corner from Reggie's BBQ is another mouthwatering spot: Fox's BBQ. The owner of the restaurant, Jessie Fox, established the place in 2011. All the meats served on the menu are slow smoked over hardwood, inspired by the St. Louis-style of barbecuing. Specialties here include hot water cornbread and ribs, though you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Address: 521 Heritage Pointe Drive B, Clarksville, TN, 37042.
4. Smoove's Grill
Smoove's Grill is another impressive spot that takes the art of smoking meats seriously. The owner uses a 28-foot long smoker that's so intense that the smoke often catches people's attention from the road. Using a blend of charcoal, paper, and wood, the smoking process accounts for the unique flavor. Popular menu items include brisket and wings, but don't skimp out on dessert. The homemade banana pudding is some of the best in town. Address: 2167 Fort Campbell Boulevard, Clarksville, TN, 37042.
5. South of the River BBQ
South of the River is a family-run barbecue joint that's been established in the area under different names for multiple generations. The owners declare that their barbecue is truly Clarksville-style. You'll find a little bit of everything on the menu, from ribs, to chicken, mac and cheese, fried okra, and fried cabbage. After you've finished your delicious barbecue meal, be sure to grab a homemade cinnamon roll on your way out. You won't be disappointed! Address: 2300 TN-48, Clarksville, TN, 37040.
6. Shiloh Bar-B-Que
Last, but certainly not least, we arrive to Shiloh's Bar-B-Que. It's here that the basics of barbecue are perfected. Whether it's pulled pork, homemade deviled eggs, green beans, or corn bread, you'll feel like you're enjoying a home-cooked meal at Shiloh's. After your incredible meal, try to save room for dessert and pick up a fried pie made by the local Possum Hollow Bakery (which happens to be right down the road). Address: 3349 TN-13, Cumberland Furnace, TN, 37051.
