When most of us think of iconic foods from South Dakota, our minds immediately go to chislic. But what is chislic? This tried-and-true SoDak delicacy has a long and fascinating history that dates all the way back to our German-Russian ancestors, who brought the concept to the States when they first immigrated generations ago. Let's learn more about the chislic meaning in South Dakota:
Introduced in the 1870s by German-Russian immigrant John Hoellwarth, chislic is commonly made with skewered beef, lamb, venison, or buffalo and is served with a side of salt and saltine crackers.

While the German Russians initially prepared this meal on the grill, they found themselves without access to trees when they arrived on the prairie, which is when the preparation method was switched to oil or lard.
(Okay, so maybe chislic wasn't *technically* invented in South Dakota, but it is said to be the first place in America to both have and perfect it!)
