The Oldest Lunch Counter In New Mexico Will Take You On A Trip Down Memory Lane

Duran Central Pharmacy in Albuquerque offers a vintage lunch counter experience with authentic New Mexican cuisine.

Old-fashioned pharmacies and lunch counters are hard to find these days, and they've largely become a part of our country's past. But if you happen to be in Albuquerque, you can enjoy a good old-fashioned lunch counter experience Southwest-style at Duran Central Pharmacy.

Located at 1815 Central Ave. NW, Duran Central Pharmacy has been open since 1942.

The original owner was Pete Duran, a graduate of Notre Dame and the Colorado School of Pharmacy.

The lunch counter, which has a wonderful vintage look, is a frequent stop for locals and tourists alike.

It's open daily, although the hours vary.

But don't expect a fast food experience when you visit. Everything here, including the hand-rolled tortillas, is made in-house.

And you'll find plenty of authentic New Mexican chile on the menu.

The Blue Corn Enchilada Plate is a local favorite.

And if you can't make up your mind, the Duran Combination Plate offers a little bit of everything: one taco, one tamale, one enchilada, red or green chile, and beans.

It's really no wonder Duran's has been featured in culinary and travel publications.

They've earned shout-outs in New Mexico Magazine, Sunset Magazine, and Conde Naste, just to name a few.

Along with a full pharmacy and the award-winning lunch counter, Duran's is also a great place to shop for local gifts.

And if you can't get enough of their chile, you can order some to go in a jar.

If you love eating at this old school lunch counter, you'll definitely appreciate dining at New Mexico's oldest restaurant.
