When you think of fine dining in Omaha, you may think of the fancy steakhouses out west or the insanely expensive options downtown. But there's one steakhouse nestled in the heart of the city that's been serving delicious meals since 1944...and it shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. Gorat's Steakhouse might be the most historic steakhouse in Nebraska, and a visit there is unlike any other meal in the state.
If you've ever driven down Center Street in Omaha around 50th street, you've surely noticed the huge neon sign with a globe proclaiming that the restaurant just behind it serves the "Finest Steaks In The World."
That restaurant is Gorat's Steakhouse, and it's been a local fixture since 1944. The focus here has always been quality food and quality service, and even after all these years, it's still delivering both. Im fact, many people call it the best steakhouse in Nebraska.
Gorat's stayed in the family until 2012 when a local restauranteur purchased it. Updates had been made to the interior in the 1970s, but the new owner carefully set about restoring it to how it looked in its early days. The transformation of this Nebraska steakhouse was refreshing.
Unsurprisingly, some of the most popular menu items are the steaks. Each one comes from Midwestern beef that's been aged for a minimum of 21 days. Go for the whiskey ribeye for an Omaha classic or the large 22-oz Omaha T-Bone, which happens to be billionaire Warren Buffet's personal favorite.
Yes, you read that correctly - the "Oracle of Omaha" or "Wizard of Wall Street" calls Gorat's his favorite steakhouse. He and his Berkshire Hathaway shareholders often hold events here during their annual shareholders meeting.
Stop by at just the right time and you may get to spot Warren in the flesh. But there's also a cardboard cutout of the famed investor that makes for an interesting photo op.
While Gorat's is primarily a steakhouse, it also serves a huge menu of other items. You can never go wrong with a big plate of meatloaf and mashed potatoes!
The seafood selections are always extremely fresh and flavorful. The full bar serves cocktails, beer, and wine.
The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, and there are occasionally special events like the Mother's Day brunch, wine-tasting dinner, and meatball taste-off.
Honestly, it doesn't matter what you order - the selections and the atmosphere will keep you coming back over and over when you're hungry in Omaha.
Don't forget to order dessert - the freshly made goodies are the perfect way to cap off your delectable meal.
And if you're lucky enough to visit this Nebraska steakhouse on a Saturday night, you'll even get to enjoy dancing and live music. What fun!
