If you've ever been to South Omaha, chances are you've seen the iconic Johnny's Cafe building on L Street. The restaurant opened in 1922 and has become an essential part of Omaha's dining scene. From its humble beginnings as a small saloon to its current status as a beloved local restaurant, Johnny's has seen the city around it change quite a bit. But what hasn't changed is the restaurant's high-quality food and excellent service.
Even as Omaha has grown and changed significantly all around it, Johnny's Cafe has stood in the same spot. It started out as an eight-stool saloon just up the street from the Omaha stockyards. The restaurant became a fixture of the South Omaha landscape over the years.
The first thing you notice about Johnny's may be the unique interior. The restaurant underwent major remodels in the 1970s, and that was the last time the decor was changed significantly. Today it's a throwback to another time in Omaha.
Having been open for a century, Johnny's has accumulated quite a collection of unusual art and fascinating objects. This 3D wall sculpture in one of the banquet rooms is a good example of the interesting sights you'll see inside Johnny's.
If you're looking for a quiet, intimate dining experience, you'll find it here. The interior lighting is gentle and the sound level is low, so you can expect a delicious, relaxing meal.
And wait until you see the menu. You'll find steaks of all kinds, including massive slabs of prime rib that will leave you pleasantly stuffed.
Try the Geronimo for something a little different. It's a bone-in ribeye steak topped with fresh onion rings.
Or eat your prime rib in a more casual fashion when you order the Primewich: thinly shaved prime rib served on a pretzel bun.
Johnny's also serves plenty of non-steak options. This chicken parmesan is made from scratch and it's everything a cheese-loving pasta-eater could want.
The sides deserve a mention, as well. The macaroni and cheese is beyond compare - in fact, why not make a whole meal of it?
Dessert is a must-do here at Johnny's. There are several selections, but we wholeheartedly recommend the creme brulee.
Johnny's has been voted the best steakhouse in Omaha many times over. It's one of those places that you'll want to keep visiting again and again. Next time you're planning an event, book one of the private dining areas to share the deliciousness with your whole group.
