If you've spent any time in McCook, Nebraska, you've probably eaten at Sehnert's Bakery & Bieroc Cafe. The little family-owned restaurant has been operating for more than 60 years and holds a special place in many of our hearts. In January 2019, Sehnert's was honored with the prestigious James Beard America’s Classic Award.
The award is only given to five mom & pop restaurants in the country each year. Sehnert's is the first establishment in Nebraska to ever receive it.
The America's Classics award is given to beloved hometown restaurants that hold a timeless appeal. This description fits Sehnert's very well.
The restaurant is best known for its bierocs, the meat-stuffed yeasty sandwiches that were the forerunners to the fast-food favorite Runzas.
Here at Sehnert's, these delicacies are all handmade in much the way they were generations ago. You can definitely taste the care that goes into each one.
The bieroc is just one of the many delightful treats that you'll find at Sehnert's Bakery & Bieroc Cafe. There are other types of sandwiches and a wide variety of sides and traditional baked goods.
A full range of coffee-based drinks and smoothies are a delicious accompaniment to your morning pastry or afternoon meal.
Special treats rotate through the menu from time to time, highlighting the bakery's creativity and skill in everything they make.
There's even a music and art venue next door where McCook residents go to have some truly memorable cultural experiences. It's a well-regarded gathering place that just about everyone in McCook has visited at least a few times.
The award couldn't have gone to a more deserving restaurant in Nebraska. Sehnert's is one of our most beloved culinary treasures. Visit to find out for yourself at 312 Norris Ave. in McCook. Check out the bakery's website or Facebook page for more information.
