At its core, a great steak is relatively simple. You take a stellar cut of meat, season it thoughtfully, cook it just right, and voila! You've got yourself a fantastic, all-American meal (complete with decadent sides, of course). But while simple at heart, the art of the steakhouse is changing - or rather, diversifying. From traditional chophouses to ranch-to-table eateries to polished, modern iterations of the classic, red-blooded haven, there's a meat-lovers paradise for every taste and occasion. Fortunately, Minnesota is home to some phenomenal steakhouses across the spectrum! These top steakhouses in Minnesota are by no means a complete list of the amazing dining options our state has to offer, but they're definitely a fantastic starting point on your quest for the perfect steak. In no particular order:
1. The Butcher's Tale, Minneapolis
A delightful hotspot that opened in 2021, The Butcher's Tale is a uniquely refined take on the traditional steakhouse - transforming it into a meat-centric beer-garden-meets-gastropub. Here, delightfully creative center cuts, hangers, and ribeye steaks fill the menu, like the Angus Beef Tenderloin dripping in red wine syrup, but you'll also find incredibly enticing varieties of high-end house-made sausages to enjoy. If you still have room to spare, the BBQ-inspired side dishes are comfort food at its finest! You also have the option of enjoying your meal in the lushly landscaped outdoor beer garden.
Pro Tip: Looking for a meaty option that's worth a trip on its own? The massive, Texas-style Beef Long Rib is a plate-sized, bone-in single rib smoked and smothered in a spicy molasses sauce. It's huge enough to be its own meal!
2. Manny's Steakhouse, Minneapolis
As one of the most popular steakhouses in the state and with many a national award to its name, Manny's has rightfully earned its iconic reputation as the place to dig into a carnivore-style plate and an equally "prime" spot on our list of the best steakhouses in Minnesota. Unabashedly championing meat at its most carnal (i.e. without the frills), this Minneapolis steakhouse is a staple that should be on every true meatatarian's list.
Ribeyes, strips, filets, and more are all "bull-to-table" from the restaurant's own herd of cattle, then center-cut, dry-aged, and cooked to sigh-inducing perfection. Enjoy the warm, wood and leather-accented atmosphere and tasteful bull-centric artwork while you dine, but come with a hearty appetite and a hefty dose of determination - the plate-sized steaks and even larger sharing sides aren't for the faint of heart.
3. Lindey's Prime Streak House, Arden Hills
Charming, rustic, and evoking the feeling of a cozy cabin in Northern Minnesota, Lindey's Prime is a historic space that pays homage to steak in the most authentic way possible. There are less than a dozen items on the menu here, so you know that each hearty entrée is crafted with care. Lindey's Special Sirloin is popular for good reason, but for something a little lighter before an adventure in the Northwoods, the steak sandwich is a tender, piled high option that is sure to satisfy!
4. Murray's, Minneapolis
White tablecloth dining meets deliriously tender steak and garlic toast heaven at this vibrant, neon-lit landmark. Murray's has been family-run in the heart of Minneapolis since 1946, and the multi-generational ownership has created a true steakhouse legacy that has mastered the art of flavorful beef cuts. In fact, Murray's signature steaks (for two) are so delectable that the restaurant boasts itself as the "Home of the Silver Butter Knife Steak." It's that tender!
For a more upscale steak option that looks as divine as it tastes, the Peppercorn Strip Sirloin is delicately imbibed with Dijon brandy and topped with an incredible seared garlic jam and peppercorn crust that's out of this world. Or, try one of their other flavorful, dry-aged a la carte cuts for an equally delicious experience. Dig into tantalizing seared salmon, vodka and mushroom ravioli, or crusted walleye if you're craving something a little extra - the menu is always full of new and creative options!
5. Jax Cafe, Minneapolis
A historic, family steakhouse to the core, Jax Café is a stunning example of how tradition and flavor can marry. Combining classic supper club décor - complete with chandeliers, stained glass windows, and deep cherry woods - and impeccable service, this homey restaurant delivers a food experience to be remembered even before the first bite.
The prime rib is practically legendary here, but you won't want to miss the classic, old school hamburger steak with blue cheese and sauteed mushrooms. For a truly exquisite meal, tuck into a classic filet with a side salad and house dressing. Diners rave about it! While you're here, bask in the incredible ambiance of the lush patio, and maybe even order a plate of rainbow trout to go with your perfectly-cooked steak - it's fresh caught from the stream in the garden!
6. Mancini's Char House, Minneapolis
If you're like us and the simple addition of the word "char" to Mancini's name elicits an uncontrollable salivary reaction… well, you're in for a treat! The classic Italian mob-style décor here creates an incredibly authentic 50s experience that perfectly suits the fire-grilled sides and sweet, boozy milkshakes. Add in the surprisingly hidden location and the perfectly-seared meat and you have a classic Twin Cities stop that is as much of an experience as it is delicious.
7. 6Smith, Wayzata
Come for the surf and turf, stay for the views. 6Smith is a lux waterfront steakhouse and seafood restaurant that kicks the classic steak and shrimp meal up a few notches. While the eye-catching wall of wine is impressive, to say the least, it's the exclusive cuts, premiere sides, and seafood combos that set this small town gem apart. Try the Marinated Flank Steak with potato puree, roasted mushrooms, and parmesan cream for a classic blend of flavors, or the Black Angus Filet Mignon with bacon jam and cheddar fondue for something unexpected. Pork, chicken, and fresh day-caught seafood options are just as spectacular and even more creative. Whatever you're craving, you can't go wrong!
8. P.S. Steak, Minneapolis
When it comes to ambiance, P.S. Steak is urban chic and then some. Marble finishes, living foliage, and cozy fireplaces exude romance and create an intimate dining experience. But despite the name, steak is far from an afterthought here; it's the star of the show! Dry-aged Wagyu and Angus steaks are brought in from private ranches in Idaho, and creative seasonal, upscale additions are always being added to the menu. Drizzle your steak with some extra decadence by choosing from any number of accoutrements, inspired by the French roots of the space's former inhabitant, La Belle Vie. Try some foie gras, béarnaise, or beurre to really take those classic flavors to a whole new level!
9. Prime Steakhouse, Morris
A relative newcomer to Minnesota's steakhouse scene, Prime Steakhouse is all about steak the way you like it - or, "hand crafted culinary experiences," as it were. The walk-in dry aging room is a first in Minnesota, which is an incredible opportunity to see first-hand where the magic begins! Step one: pick your cut. Step two: pick your steak sauce (if you wish). Each glaze, butter, or libations-based topper is sure to not only blow your tastes buds away, but is the perfect way to truly customize your steak experience and experiment with different meats and flavor combos.
10. Gianni's Steakhouse, Wayzata
This welcoming, neighborhood must-visit offers the perfect blend of lively casual-meets-upscale. But don't mistake Gianni's for a trendy local fad with so-so food - this family-friendly restaurant is also family-owned and has been serving up mouthwatering steaks for years. The beef here is carefully selected, thoughtfully sourced, and 100% free of any hormones or additives. Just fresh meat the way it was meant to be!
Alongside an extensive wine list, Gianni's offers an incredibly wide selection of premium steaks that range from Petite Filet Mignon to the hefty Delmonico to the luscious New York Wagyu. Each option is served with tantalizing a béarnaise and roasted garlic for just the right amount of oomph. Can't commit to just one item? The seafood options here are divine!
