This Is the Best Buffet in Michigan, Known for Its Sushi
Fuji Sushi in Madison Heights, Michigan, is changing buffet expectations. Its fresh, well-made sushi keeps Michigan foodies coming back.
One of the great surprises of my adult life happened recently, and it involved sushi. On a buffet. Yes, you read that right. Since I moved to Michigan, I’ve been on a low-key but very sincere hunt for top-notch sushi. This is embarrassing to admit to family, friends, and certainly to my favorite foodies, but until yesterday, my favorite Michigan sushi came from a pretty fancy grocery store. Good lighting, respectful fish, solid rice. That was my bar. Then I found myself in Madison Heights, and my sushi standards moved up. I met my new favorite Michigan sushi at a buffet, and I’m still processing that sentence.
Fuji Japanese Buffet in Madison Heights is the kind of place that resets expectations. Walking in, I braced myself out of habit. Buffets teach us to be cautious people. Then I noticed how clean everything was. Not “clean for a buffet” clean. Actually clean. Surfaces shone, floors were clutter-free, and nothing looked tired or forgotten. Food rotated constantly, and nothing sat around long enough to look sad. Three sushi chefs worked the entire time we were there, slicing, rolling, plating, and paying attention. That detail matters. Sushi needs eyes on it. Fuji understands that.
The sushi itself stopped me mid-chew more than once. Several cuts of fish showed up that I’d never had before, including a mysterious super-firm white fish with a creamy yet structured texture that I could not get enough of. No label. No explanation. Just tasty firmness. I went back for it more times than I’ll admit publicly. Aside from that delicious mystery, everything else stayed clearly labeled, which I appreciate because guessing games feel less charming when raw fish is involved.
Fuji’s buffet stretches well beyond sushi rolls. I spotted mussels, which I happily loaded onto my plate like I’d discovered buried treasure. Chicken feet also made an appearance. I skipped those. I tried chicken feet once in Orlando, and we agreed to see other people. Tempura was hot and crisp. Noodle dishes brought that savory, cooked-to-order energy that keeps plates moving. Egg rolls and rangoon sat nearby, looking confident and well fried. Seafood plays a starring role here, including lobster and crab legs that appear daily until they sell out. We didn’t grab any, mostly because we ran out of stomach before we ran out of curiosity.
The sushi bar deserves its own moment. Watching the chefs work feels like dinner and a show, minus the awkward audience participation. Rolls range from classic favorites to creative combinations, all made fresh in front of you. The rice hits that elusive balance between warm and structured. Fish tastes clean and thoughtfully handled. Each bite lands the way sushi should, without drama or distraction.
Fuji also understands that life happens outside dining rooms. You can take the buffet to go. The sushi bar offers to-go options as well. Party trays work for gatherings, celebrations, or days when cooking feels personal. Daily specials rotate, which keeps regulars interested and first-timers curious. There’s also a private party room that works for weddings, birthdays, work events, or any group that wants Japanese food and zero stress.
Madison Heights itself makes a great excuse to visit. The city sits in Oakland County and is often called “the Center of Everything” thanks to its location and accessibility. Red Oaks Water Park is nearby for summer fun, and the area offers plenty of hiking and outdoor spaces when Michigan decides to show off. A day of exploring pairs nicely with a meal that rewards you for leaving the house.
So come visit Michigan. Come visit Madison Heights. Spend the morning hiking, cool off at Red Oaks Water Park, and then sit down at Fuji Japanese Buffet with an open mind and a very empty stomach. I found my favorite Michigan sushi on a buffet. I’m still smiling about it, and I suspect you will too. Also, if y'all know of some spectacular sushi in the Metro Detroit area, please let me know! I'm still on the hunt, after all.
