There’s just something special about waking up early in the morning, grabbing a hot cup of coffee, and bringing home a box of freshly made donuts. It’s a treat that might only be available every now and then, but that only makes the experience better and more memorable - even more so when the donuts are hand-crafted and only available for a few hours every morning. My family absolutely delights in making the excursion to Carlson’s Donuts in Severn, MD, and grabbing a box of these incredible pastries that are the best example of what a donut can be. And the consensus is that the rest of us local Marylanders are just as delighted by Carlson’s expertly-crafted creations, too! Once you see them for yourself, you’ll surely understand why.

Carlson’s is located in a small shopping center right off of Telegraph Road. The tiny, unassuming exterior of the building manages to hit a nostalgic beat, especially if you pull in early in the morning, when the donuts are just getting started.

The donuts are hand-crafted from the time the shop opens, and they’re sold until they run out. The shop is only open in the early hours, so you should be sure to get there as soon as you can.

The ever-changing Carlson's Donuts menu has all the classics, even topping the jelly-filled donuts with generous amounts of powdered sugar. The sour cream donuts are one of my personal favorites.

Of course, the stunning color of the rainbow sprinkles and the delicious texture of the frosted coconut should not be overlooked.

There are dozens of varieties to choose from, and I have yet to have a disappointing donut in my many years of coming here!

It’s always a nice surprise for my family when they wake up to a box of these astounding sweets on a quiet weekend morning. We’ll devour them slowly over the next couple of days, and it’s always nice to try new flavors that we haven’t had yet.

Although, these donuts are so delicious and perfect that I tend to devour at least one in the car on my way home.
