Iowans are lucky - it's not hard to find amazing food in our enormous state. Okay, actually, some of the food might be hard to find, because we live in such an enormous state. Sometimes, we've got to travel off the beaten path to find some of the hidden gems that define Iowan cuisine - but for a meal at places like the River Rock Cafe, it's absolutely worth a little bit of travel.
Butch's River Rock Cafe is one such spot, located at 1529 253rd St., Mt. Pleasant, IA 52641.
This tiny family restaurant is truly isolated - miles from the center of town and right on the banks of the Skunk River.
Unless you know what you're looking for, it's easy to miss. You'll have to travel a few rural roads to even get close.
Once you find Butch's River Rock Cafe, though, you are in for a treat! You can dine outside and enjoy the water view...
... or head in, where you'll feel like you're dining with family.
It's a favorite place for travelers to stop for a hearty country breakfast.
And, of course, their tenderloin is consistently at the top of the "Best of Iowa" lists, and it's absolutely worth trying.
If you're not feeling pork for lunch or dinner, they have a full menu of comfort foods, burgers, salads and other classic Iowa dishes.
Afterwards, you can walk off all those comfort food calories in nearby Oakland Mills Park!
The serene wildlife area and nature center are accessible from the iron footbridge that crosses the scenic Skunk River.
Oakland Mills Park is about a ten minute walk, and there are a few places to stop along the way for panoramic views of the river.
