Herb’s Fish Place in Georgia is a historic, family-owned seafood restaurant known for its welcoming atmosphere and delicious local-caught fried fish.
There aren’t too many spots like Herb’s Fish Place in Georgia left in the South. This time-tested seafood hotspot has been a local favorite for years. Family-owned smack dab in the middle of Georgia, Herb’s is about to celebrate 50 years in business this October. Check out the history behind this restaurant located just a few miles outside of Oconee.
Not only does Herb’s Fish Place in Georgia serve scrumptious seafood to locals, but it also has an interesting history, too!
What began in the 1960s as a small gas station, eventually transformed into Herb’s Fish Place in October 1971.
With eight-foot-long tables that sat 30 at a time, the community would gather for local-caught fried fish and fixings.
Reverend Herb Johnson and his wife Belinda, also known as Mama Herb, created a welcoming atmosphere, plus a cooking style that would give Herb the nickname “Catfish King.”
While Herb and Belinda passed away years ago, the restaurant is still run by their daughter Betsy and other family members in order to keep the tradition of delicious seafood alive.
Open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., guests can travel out to Tennille for the ultimate fish fry.
The hidden treasure fish house offers history, good eats, and a friendly atmosphere all in the heart of Georgia.
