Wine tasting is one of those activities that both tourists and locals never get bored of. California is known for its wineries, especially the ones in the famous Napa Valley area. You can spend a week in wine country and still not visit all the wineries.
A few of the wineries are household names, but sometimes it's the smaller operations that will pleasantly surprise you. Whether the winery is famous or not, you can often taste wines you cannot buy in stores. See our list of the most beautiful wineries and let us know if you agree.
1. Ram’s Gate Winery - Sonoma
This is a picturesque place to start your wine tour if you’re coming from the south. Located on a hill, this winery marks the start of wine country. Book in advance if you’re traveling in a group or want food pairings with your wine.
2. Domaine Carneros - Napa
This estate is probably what you picture when you think of Napa. Modeled after a French estate, this beautiful chateau is the perfect place to meander around while sipping a glass of sparkling wine.
3. Hess Persson Estate - Napa
This estate offers a lot of things to do while you enjoy the tasting. From food pairings to ATV rides to a guided tour of their art museum, you can sip while enjoying the scenery.
4. Kunde Family Winery - Kenwood
The Kunde family has operated on this land for five generations, and today they run a certified sustainable winery. Book a hike through the vineyards while you wine taste. You can even bring your dog!
5. Chateau Montelena - Calistoga
Founded in 1882, this winery is famous for its white wine. This ivy-covered chateau is in a tranquil setting overlooking a Chinese garden.
6. Michel-Schlumberger Wine Estate - Healdsburg
This gorgeous winery has a central courtyard where you can drink wine while soaking up the atmosphere. Located in the Dry Creek Valley, the winemakers focus on several popular varietals as well as make some of the more rare wines, like Pinot Blanc and Petite Sirah.
7. Castello di Amarosa - Calistoga
This 14-century inspired castle will make you feel like you’re in Italy. With 107 rooms, a moat, and a torture chamber, the castle looks very authentic. Reservations are required for a tasting, tour, or to just enter the property, so call ahead of your visit.
8. Francis Ford Coppola Winery - Geyserville
Even if you don’t taste here, be sure to tour the property– it’s absolutely stunning. Check out movie props, like the desk from The Godfather.
9. Fritz Underground Winery - Cloverdale
This fairytale-like winery is a great place to bring a snack, buy a bottle, and sit on the terrace to enjoy the view of the property. Partially underground, Fritz Underground Winery offers cave tours– a fun add-on after a wine tasting.
