Tucked away along Geary Boulevard awaits one of San Francisco's best new restaurants: Prik Hom. It opened in February of 2023 by the Suwanpanya siblings, a pair dedicated to celebrating Thai culture through cooking and community. It's also landed a spot on The Restaurant List by The New York Times. Let's dive into what makes this SF restaurant so spectacular.
Prik Hom translates to fragrant chili, a key ingredient in the aroma of spices that fill the kitchen. The restaurant's modest interior is unassuming but sets an undistracted stage for the fragrant and flavorful dishes to come.
The portions are small, allowing diners to sample several. Each dish offers a burst of seasonal ingredients and traditional Thai cooking, although the menu isn't limited to one region but rather the entire country.
By all accounts, there's no wrong dish to order, so you might be tempted to try one of the specials, which will incorporate seasonal and local ingredients. But if you want to order some of the hits, consider the lemongrass scallops, eggplant with basil, or beef curry. Upon sampling any of these creations, you won't be surprised to learn that the chef is Michelin-trained. He draws inspiration for his dishes from traditional Thai cookbooks as well as his time working for Michelin-starred kitchens in eateries in Bangkok.
Reviewers praise the dishes for being simple yet filled with complex flavors seldom found in other local Thai restaurants, which tend to capitalize on different variations of Pad Thai.
Our advice? Save room for dessert; the smoked young coconut ice cream has been called the crown jewel of the menu. It's served with rice sauce, sweet poached palm seed, fluffy sweet rice, and smoked with a Thai old-style candle that the chef himself brought back from Thailand. This decadent yet impossibly light dessert will be the perfect way to end your meal.
Take a look at the menu and then make your reservation at Prik Hom for up to a month in advance. The restaurant is open Wednesday through Sunday from 5 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. While reservations are highly recommended, there may be a table or two held for walk-ins, especially if you can get there right at 5 p.m. and have just two in your party.
