Turn Back Time With a Stay at This Historic Motel and a Meal at this Vintage Diner in Arizona

This retro road trip in Arizona is a major throwback, letting you turn back the clock with a stay in a retro motel and a meal at a nostalgic diner.

I'm not sure about you, but in today's fast-paced world, I often find myself longing for the good old days before those tiny screens in our pockets dominated our lives. Although the heyday of Route 66 was before my time, to me, the Mother Road symbolizes the version of America I idolize. Wide open spaces, charming motels and diners, wholesome family adventures... what's not to love? This retro road trip in Arizona is a major throwback, letting you turn back the clock with a stay in a retro motel and a meal at a nostalgic diner. You'll be ready to go to a sock hop and get some old-fashioned records playing after this!

You've probably seen pictures of the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook, a town that inspired the movie "Cars," by now. It has been featured in numerous magazines and other publications over the years, and for good reason. This adorable roadside motel is centrally located along Old Route 66 and has been in operation since 1950, and remains in the hands of the founding family.

The teepee-shaped rooms, known as Wigwams, sleep 2-4 guests and are very affordable. They offer a perfect balance of old and new; the original furnishings are still in place, but accented with modern amenities such as WiFi, air conditioning, and TVs. There are also modern apartments located behind the Wigwams, suitable for larger groups or those seeking an extended stay option. The apartments are equipped with kitchenettes and can accommodate between 2 and 6 guests, depending on which one you reserve.

My favorite thing about the Wigwam Motel is the permanent classic car display in the parking lot. It really helps set the scene and turn back the hands of time!

About two hours away from Holbrook is Williams, and this is where you'll find Goldie's Route 66 Diner, an unassuming — yet undeniably charming — restaurant owned and operated by longtime area residents. Once inside, you’re met with a total blast from the past. Checkered black-and-white floors and vintage memorabilia serve as nods to yesteryear, and the cheerful staff are the cherry on top of the sundae (or the banana split — what’s your favorite sweet treat to order at a diner?).

Perhaps you’ll order a cup of brewed-just-right coffee while you peruse the menu. Breakfast is definitely the highlight, and it’s served all day, so nobody has to miss out. You’ll see diner staples like steak and eggs, omelets, pancakes, and more, with portions generous enough to satisfy even the biggest of appetites.

If you aren’t a big fan of breakfast food (I’m right there with you!), don’t fret. There are also plenty of delicious lunch options, including hearty burgers and sandwiches, as well as classic appetizers such as onion rings and mozzarella sticks. Between the food and the nostalgic vibes, you'll have a fantastic taste of classic Route 66 in Arizona. If you need a place to spend the night in Williams, check out the Trailborn Grand Canyon, Outdoor Collection by Marriott Bonvoy, located right on Route 66.
