The Carnton Plantation is located in Franklin, Tennessee, a physical ode to the Antebellum era of the south. The property is simply stunning. One that attracts thousands of visitors a year, has been written about by numerous historians and fiction authors and has thoroughly entrenched itself in the hearts of our locals. Beyond the history, however, there is a darker side to the home. The land may just walk with ghosts...if you care to believe.
The Carnton Plantation has made a name for itself as one of the most haunted places in Tennessee. It graces the quiet town of Franklin with its regal beauty, inhabiting a space that now operates as a museum run by the aptly named Carnton Society. You can visit for yourself at 1345 Carnton Lane.
The Battle of Franklin was fought in the heart of the Civil War, and is known as one of the most devastating battles for the south. And the Carnton Plantation? Witnessed it all. There are stories that the Carnton children themselves haunt the home, since only two of the five survived childhood, but many tend to believe it is the spirits of the soldiers that stay restless.
1,700 Confederate soldiers are buried on the property, making this the largest Confederate graveyard in the south. The mansion itself served as a hospital after the bloody battle, where four generals died of their devastating wounds.
There is also said to be a kitchen ghost, a young girl, who was killed well before the war in the 1840s. Though the facts are fuzzy, some say she rejected a suitor and was murdered in a jealous rage. She is said to still sweep the floors at dusk.
The most interesting part of the haunting, is that the ghosts seem to really enjoy the autumn months. At dusk, you may just see the ghost of a woman floating on the back porch, or the spirits of the fallen soldiers. Yet another ghost, an officer is said to pace the expansive front porch during the tired autumn months.
What do you believe? You can tour the mansion on you're own, if you're in the area. You'll learn all about the historic reality of the home, and your tour guide MAY just have a ghost story up their sleeve - we wouldn't be surprised in the slightest.
