The Small-Town Harvest Festival In South Carolina Belongs On Your Autumn Bucket List
Tucked away in the small town of Saint Helena Island, South Carolina is a national historic treasure, Fort Fremont Preserve. It's the site where Fort Fremont was built in 1898 to defend Port Royal Naval Station on Parris Island, one of six fortifications designed to protect the southeastern coast during the Spanish-American War. It provided state-of-the-art coastal defense against new battleships and heavy cruisers. The fort was abandoned after Port Royal Naval Station was moved to Charleston and a new dry dock was opened there in 1909. The Fort Fremont property was acquired in 2004 by Beaufort County as a historical site and is considered the most haunted ruins in South Carolina. Efforts for its continued preservation and promotion are overseen by the Friends of Fort Fremont, which will be holding a harvest festival at this beautiful site loaded with history in Saint Helena Island, South Carolina.
This year's event is scheduled for Sunday, November 5th, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.
The Fort Fremont grounds consisted of 170 acres with numerous outbuildings, including an administration building, guard house, barracks, hospital, stable, mess hall, bakery, commissary, post exchange, lavatory, and a water tower. It was manned by a crew of up to 110 people.
A History Center was built in 2021, its design modeled with architectural features matching those of the Enlisted Men's Barracks. Inside the Center, visitors can enjoy a replica of the original fort.
The diorama was built by Dennis Cannady, a Friends of Fort Fremont Member, using U.S. Corps of Engineers documents, allowing it to stay true to original specifications.
The harvest festival at Fort Fremont will be held in November with free admission.
It will be an old-fashioned celebration, complete with food ...
