The Little City Near San Francisco That Just May Be The Most Unique City In The World
If you're willing to drive roughly 2 to 2.5 hours outside San Francisco, then you'll want to check out Placerville. This unique city has a fascinating history, small-town appeal, and one odd nickname. Back in the 1800s, gold was discovered in this region, and it has left a major mark here. In fact, Placerville was once called Hangtown because of the numerous hangings that occurred there. When you are in Placerville, make sure to visit Hangtown Gold Bug Park located at 2635 Gold Bug Lane, Placerville. Check the website on the Hangtown Gold Bug Park. San Francisco is 125 miles to the west of Placerville. Located in El Dorado County, Placerville is in the heart of California's Gold Rush country.
The Belltower was originally a 25-foot high wooden tower built in 1878. Two decades later, it was rebuilt as a steel structure. There is a farmers market in this area every Wednesday.
An effigy of a man being hung is roped from the second floor of a building, which marks the spot of the town hangings.
You'll step back in time when you enter the Hangtown Gold Bug Mine! It's an authentic gold mine from the Gold Rush days.
This is also the only gold mine in California that is open to visitors. Be sure to book a tour as well. The mine tour follows a 320-foot channel bored into an outcrop of slate.

The historic Masonic lodge in the old center of Placerville was established on May 6, 1853.
This historic clock dates from the late 1800s. The clock is on Main Street, near a bed and breakfast.
After a stroll down Main Street to see Placerville's unique historical spots, you can enjoy one of its many fine restaurants.
Main Street also has some great coffee houses and spots to enjoy a bite outside.
