Why waste time standing in line waiting for a picture with a mall Santa when you can take the family to one of these awesome winter destinations? North Dakota has so many snowy opportunities for great fun all around the state. Events, attractions, and timeless activities for the whole family are as abundant as the snow, and here's some to start with:
1. Experience an old west Christmas in Medora
The western town of Medora, North Dakota is one of the state's most popular attractions in the summer for its spectacular natural scenery and fascinating old western themed town. Many would consider it a seasonal attraction, but they would be wrong! Medora hosts events like the Old Fashioned Cowboy Christmas and a holiday version of their popular play. There is also non-stop outdoor activities you can indulge in out in the surrounding area such as cross-country skiing and more.
2. Hit the slopes at Huff Hills in Mandan
Enjoy some skiing and snowboarding at Huff Hills Ski area near Mandan, North Dakota. This beautiful area has great slopes for people of all ages and skills. It's a classic winter must-do destination, every year!
3. Watch this dazzling train roll through six North Dakota towns
The amazing Canadian Pacific Holiday Train will be making its annual journey across northern US and Canada, and North Dakota is included. This train will be rolling through six towns in the state on December 13 and 14, 2018, including Minot, so you definitely don't want to miss it!
4. Go cross-country skiing or snowshoeing in a state park
While some of North Dakota's state parks are seasonal for the summer and fall, there are many that are open year-round with groomed trails and rental cross-country skis or snowshoes. These places are perfect for a family outing in the snow and you'll be traversing some unique and gorgeous North Dakota landscapes.
5. Embrace the chill of winter at North Dakota's Frostival
It's true: North Dakota can be unreasonably cold in the wintertime. With plenty of snow and chilly temperatures below zero at times, it can be hard to want to go out and do anything during this season. Frostival was created to change that. This frost festival is all about embracing the cold and making the most out of winter. It began in Fargo just a few years ago but has been steadily increasing in popularity. There is so much to do at this event including snow yoga, sledding, and much more, and you won't want to miss it. This winter it will be in January 25-26, 2019.
6. Set up shop on a frozen lake and enjoy a spot of ice fishing
Who doesn't love ice fishing? This is a classic North Dakota winter pastime and will continue to be popular for years to come. Set up your ice fishing house, make a hole, and enjoy all the aspects of fishing - but in winter. Places like Devils Lake, shown above, are popular for this.
7. Take in the sight of stunning holiday lights displays
The holidays are the time to bring out thousands of twinkling lights and there are quite a few parks in North Dakota that have the best way to experience them. Parks such as Lindenwood Park in Fargo, Chahinkapa Park in Wahpeton, Oak Park in Minot, and so many other places put up an entire holiday lights drive. Stay in the warmth of your car and take a cruise through the lit path and enjoy the sights.
8. Discover the beauty of Walhalla in the winter at Frost Fire Park
Whether you want to indulge in some skiing, have fun snow tubing down a hill, or simply enjoy the scenery in the snow, Frost Fire Park is a prime North Dakota winter destination. They have everything you need for the perfect getaway this season.
