Mount Jefferson State Natural Area near West Jefferson is an untapped resource for outdoor recreation.
With five hiking trails and numerous overlooks, it's a perfect way to spend a morning or an afternoon.
The Sunrise and Jefferson Overlook Trail is a total of two miles, out and back combined and takes anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours if you're taking your time.
And with a lofty elevation gain of 390 steep feet, you just may want to take your time and enjoy every step.
The ultimate destination for this hike is the Jefferson Overlook, perched high on the summit of Mount Jefferson.
It's a great place to stop for a while and enjoy the breathtaking views of not one, but two towns below.
From here, you'll get a bird's eye view of both Jefferson (to the north) and West Jefferson (to the west).
