Holidays in New Orleans are truly something special. While this year will certainly different than year’s past, it will be one to remember. There are a million reasons to love New Orleans during Christmas, but here are just a few of our favorites.
1. We don’t need to shovel snow
If you’ve ever lived in an area that receives abundant snowfall, then you know what a drag it is to wake up and spend your morning shoveling your driveway.
2. You can pretty much walk around in flip flops during the holidays
Our mild winters are certainly something to be thankful for.
3. There’s plenty to see
From Celebration in the Oaks to Lafreniere’s Christmas in the Park, there are ample opportunities to see holiday light shows, even from the comfort of your car!
4. It’s good gumbo weather
I know we just praised the mild temperatures, but the second it drops below 75 degrees, kitchens all across New Orleans start making a roux in preparation for that sweet gumbo that’s such a staple for us in the winter.
5. Bonfires on the levee
This tradition lights the way for good old Saint Nick, and it’s one of the most special events of the season.
6. LUNA Fête
Presented by the New Orleans Art Council, this dazzling light show peppers the Warehouse and Art’s District for an incredible light show that must be seen to be believed. This year will be their 7th year, and while there will be some changes, it promises to be an extraordinary event.
7. Reveillon Dinners
Reveillon Dinners and New Orleans have a long history together, and if there’s anything New Orleans does better than anyone else, it’s tradition. Originally these dinners were served after midnight mass on Christmas Eve, today many restaurants around New Orleans serve modern versions, often times serving shrimp remoulade, lobster bisque, bananas foster, and many other tasty dishes.
