You Might Just Spot A Ghost At The Most Haunted Cemetery In New Mexico
Dawson Cemetery in a ghost town is believed to be haunted by the spirits of miners who died in tragic explosions.
Cemeteries are supposed to be quiet, peaceful places where people go to remember loved ones who have passed. But some places where the dead lie are not so peaceful. This cemetery in a little ghost town is said to be haunted by hundreds of unsettled souls.
The lonely, overgrown cemetery is almost all that's left of the little ghost town of Dawson.
Dawson is located about 17 miles north of Cimarron, and was founded in 1901.
Located on a windswept desert, this little cemetery is home to hundreds of graves.
At first glance, it seems like a quiet, peaceful place.
Many of the plots are overgrown with grasses and weeds.
You might think there's nothing here but headstones, but many visitors beg to differ.
During its heyday, Dawson was a bustling mining town.
The coal mines here brought prosperity to the area, and as many as 9,000 people lived here at one time. The town boasted a hospital, swimming pool, movie theater, and more.
The town thrived for awhile, but then two different mining explosions killed hundreds of men here.
On October 22, 1913, 253 men were killed when the mine exploded, and two more were killed while trying to rescue miners who were trapped. On February 8, 1923, another explosion rocked the mine, and 123 men died that day.
Many of the miners' graves are marked with iron crosses, but some people say that these miners are not at peace.
Visitors report seeing and hearing all kinds of strange activity here. Some have seen lights bobbing around the cemetery, as though men wearing mining helmets were wandering amongst the gravestones. Low voices are carried on the wind, and moans are heard here after dark.
Some ghosts have even made themselves visible to visitors.
People have reported seeing ghostly figures walking around. Some will appear to be visitors to the graves, but disappear into thin air when others approach.
Dawson Cemetery is said to be one of the most haunted places in New Mexico.
With hundreds of miners who tragically died buried here, you can see why this place might be haunted.
