There’s No Other School In America Quite Like This One In Michigan

Grand Rapids Public Museum School offers a unique educational experience by integrating a museum into its curriculum for 6th and 7th graders.

Anyone who went to school in Michigan can agree that field trips were always a unique part of the curriculum. Permission slips, packed lunches, and long bus rides always meant the opportunity to delve deeper into lessons in history, science, and art. But what if the museum was the classroom? That's exactly the case for Grand Rapids Public School. Here's more on this one-of-a-kind school that's established a campus inside of a museum:

The Grand Rapids Public Museum School is located on the fourth floor of the museum’s building.

The school is established for students in 6th and 7th grade, who enjoy the convenience of Michigan’s noteworthy museum just one floor down from the classroom.

The school places special emphasis on science, history, and culture. After learning about a certain topic, students can go downstairs and explore the museum’s collection of over 250,000 artifacts.

Students enjoy the museum as part of their everyday curriculum, but it's not the only place where learning takes place.

Just because these students happen to attend school in a museum doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy field trips, too. Students regularly make trips to the nearby YMCA for physical education and meet with local scientists and artists within the community.

By 2018, a new program will be launched to admit the first class of ninth graders. Eventually this high school will be set up in a historic building owned by the museum.
