Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary in Massachusetts offers exceptional whale-watching opportunities and other marine activities.

Whales are living wonders of the natural world. Massive, powerful, and majestic, they can sometimes be spotted off the coast of Massachusetts. However, not many people know that the state is home to a unique sanctuary where you can meet these incredible creatures face to face.

The Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary is a haven for whales and other sea creatures.

Located just at the mouth of Cape Cod Bay, this 842-square-mile patch of sea is home to some of the best whale-watching opportunities in the world.

Birds and larger marine animals come to Stellwagen Bank because the area is full of smaller creatures to eat – it’s basically a buffet of tasty fish and eels.

Because of the area’s long history as a shipping corridor, the sanctuary’s floor is lined with shipwrecks.

Visitors to the sanctuary can hop on a whale watching boat from May to October.

Vessels depart regularly from Boston, Provincetown, Barnstable, Plymouth, Gloucester, Newburyport, and Nantucket.

Once you’re aboard, you’ll have the opportunity to watch whales and dolphins from up close!

You can expect to encounter humpback whales, fin whales, minke whales, northern right whales, Atlantic white-sided dolphins, harbor porpoises, pilot whales, and harbor seals.

Visitors to the sanctuary can also enjoy bird-watching, diving, and fishing.

A trip to this unique underwater sanctuary is the perfect way to commune with nature and hang out with some of the coolest animals on Earth.
