There Is A Unique Man-Made Wonder Hiding In This City In Massachusetts

One of my favorite things about writing for OnlyInYourState is that I am constantly discovering new spots and uncovering hidden gems throughout Massachusetts. Among my favorite places to write about are the unusual and lesser-known structures and monuments that seem to be scattered across the state. We have already told you about the Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown and the historic Dutch House in Brookline. Bancroft Tower in Worcester is another spectacular spot worth visiting.

When you first lay eyes on Bancroft Tower, you may feel like you are stepping into a fairy tale. This magnificent 56-foot-high structure dates back to 1900.

The tower, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is located on the top of Prospect Hill in Worcester’s Salisbury Park.

This intricate granite and stone structure was built by a local, Stephen Salisbury III, in honor of a family friend named George Bancroft. Bancroft was born in Worcester and was the former Secretary of the Navy as well as a writer and politician.

Imagine building a tower of this magnitude over 120 years ago. Luckily Stephen Salisbury got some help from horses who hauled the large stones up Prospect Hill.

The inside of the tower has some stunning architecture, including a fireplace and a spiral staircase.

Bancroft Tower can be found at the top of Prospect Hill. Although it is a relatively short walk, it can be a bit of an uphill climb. Be sure to wear sneakers or boots.

Unfortunately, the tower is not typically open for public tours. However, just viewing it from the outside is worth the hike.

From the top of Prospect Hill, you will be able to take in some gorgeous panoramic views of the city of Worcester and beyond.

There is a small plaque on-site that tells you which hills you can see in the distance.

Bancroft Tower is also a beautiful spot for a picnic or even an impromptu photo shoot.

Have you visited Bancroft Tower in Worcester? If so, were you one of the lucky few who were able to climb it? More information on this majestic spot can be found on the City Of Worcester Salisbury Park website.

If you are looking for some other unique things to do while in the Worcester area, I suggest eating at George's Coney Island, an iconic hot dog stand, and then heading over to Hadwen Arboretum for a scenic walk through the woods. An interactive scavenger hunt is also a fun way to explore the city.
