Perched Above The Chesapeake Bay, This Overlook Is One Of The Best Views In All Of Maryland
Scenic views aren't hard to come by here in Maryland. Whether you're enjoying a lovely trail or exploring a new town, you'll find it's easy to be impressed by all the scenery that the Old Line State has to offer. Today's feature destination is yet another example of a beautiful place to stop and admire the view. The Drum Point Lighthouse is a destination in and of itself; it's one of the most historic lighthouses in the region. But that's not all -- in fact, you can climb all the way to the top and catch a stunning view of the Chesapeake Bay! Curious to learn more? Let's explore!
Planning for Drum Point Lighthouse began in 1853 when a member of the U.S. Lighthouse Board noted the need for a small lighthouse on Drum Point on the Patuxent River.
Because funds were difficult to obtain for this project, work didn't begin until July of 1883.
Drum Point is one of only four surviving Chesapeake Bay screw-pile lighthouses.
The lighthouse was officially commissioned in August of 1883 and the first lightkeeper was Benjamin Gray. By 1952, however, the light was decommissioned and replaced by a fixed light offshore.
In 1975, the lighthouse was restored and moved to its current location at the Calvert Marine Museum. The inside was re-furnished with period furniture under the direction of Anna Weems Ewalt, who was born in the cottage in 1906.
Those interested in visiting the lighthouse are invited to step inside and climb a set of very steep stairs to the top.
The view of the water and surrounding landscape is absolutely worth it, especially on a clear day.
Moreover, it's fascinating to imagine what life must have been like for a lightkeeper.
No matter if you're a history buff or a Chesapeake Bay enthusiast, you'll certainly appreciate this landmark in Solomons.
