This Unique Rail Biking Experience In Maine Belongs On Your Bucket List

Rail cycling in Maine offers a unique way to explore scenic railroad tracks on a tandem bike.

We have some tremendous train rides in Maine but have you ever wanted to ride on a railroad track but not be confined to the train car? As specific as that desire might sound, someone actually thought it up and created rail cycling! This fun activity looks exactly like it sounds you and a friend can hop on a rail bike that sits on the rails of the train tracks. You then peddle your way down the tracks for a good workout and enjoy the great outdoors for a little while. It is now a way for you to get out on the railroad tracks without the train and enjoy the scenic ride.

To find this special rail bike location you will need to travel to the Thorndike Mill and Meeting House.

This is a historic building with its own story to tell. Projects are underway to restore and utilize this property for many to enjoy and for years to come. Like many towns across Maine that relied on the railroad system and paper mills the town of Thorndike became very quiet. This historic building you see in this photo has been undergoing a revitalization. The goal is to eventually use this space as a storytelling museum. Lots of background work has been done documenting the history of this local community. In the future, you can expect to see workshops where they teach old skills like canoe building, woodworking, metal smithing, pottery, and much more. It is a fascinating story to tell and one that you can be a part of, but until then it's time to hop on a rail bike!

B&ML Railcyclers have come up with a unique way to take you on the railroad tracks.

The rail cycle is a tandem-like bike that has two people riding side by side with four wheels on the rails. The wheels are specifically designed to fit on the track allowing for a smooth ride.

Rail cycling is a great way to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. It is a very unique experience for you and one other person. Bring along a friend, or your significant other, or use this as a good time to spend with a family member in the beautiful Maine countryside.

The railroad tracks will take you on a one-hour ride about two miles in. Along the way, you will have plenty of tree coverage and beautiful views of ponds and the Maine woods.

After the two miles out you will have to hop off the bike, have you and your partner grab the cycle, then flip it around to go back again.

The way back has a slight decline allowing you to pick up the pace and enjoy a speedy ride back. It reminds me of being a kid again and seeking out the perfect hill to ride your bike down. The wind blows in your hair and you experience the thrill as your bike picks up speed.

The B&ML Railcyclers have created a very unique and interesting way to get some exercise and enjoy the outdoors. Have you ever been rail cycling before? What did you think? Let us know in the comments. Make sure to visit B&ML Railcycles to book your ticket and get out on the tracks.

A few things you should know before you go, for your safety you have to wear close-toed shoes, you must be over 10 years old to ride, you should wear pants, and riders have to be under 250 pounds to use the bike. Fit those requirements and you are good to go on a fun ride through the Maine countryside on the railroad tracks.
