When we're not sure what to do for the day, shopping is always a good option! While Maine isn't covered in shopping malls, we do have our fair share of fun and unique mom-and-pop shops. These are great for finding the perfect gift and for supporting the local economy. While many of these spots are open year-round there's one shopping experience that we look forward to visiting in the summer more than any other: the Montsweag Flea Market.
The Montsweag Flea Market in Woolwich has been around since Mother's Day weekend in 1977. That's over 40 years of perfecting the art of finding great vendors and welcoming fantastic shoppers!
Much to the chagrin of the people who look forward to visiting, the flea market was closed for all of 2020. But as things started reopening again, They announced their re-opening plans for 2021 and we were so excited!
The official re-opening for 2021 made many Maine treasure hunters happy. They re-opened on May 15th, and we're expecting the same huge turnout and amazing items for sale this year.
The flea market sits in a giant field, which means the surroundings are absolutely beautiful. And there's plenty of room to spread out to browse the tables.
And, as always, there will be quite a lot to find. From vintage cameras to magazines to crafts and antiques, it's hard to leave here empty-handed.
We love visiting with a specific purpose, but even more fun is looking through each table with nothing specific in mind.
You might just leave with a new hobby!
We also love that so many vendors come to share their expertise and passion. You'll find food vendors to fuel your exploration as well as people who are excited to share their stories. This flea market is more than just a place to shop, it's also an opportunity to learn more about fellow Mainers.
We also love that Montsweag Flea Market offers an ATM, which means vendors can operate more easily with cash and patrons won't need to worry about arriving with enough to spend.
While the flea market is outside, we've found that weather isn't much of a deterrent for hearty flea market shoppers. You'll find this place packed every day they're open.
