When planning an outing in Kentucky, you may first consider things like hiking to a waterfall, betting on a horse race, or sampling some bourbon. But Kentucky is filled with unique activities that you would never guess can be found in our very own state. From spending the night in a castle to coming dangerously close to sharks, Kentucky provides plenty of surprises. Here are some of the most unique things to do in Kentucky:
1. Spend the Night in a Castle
Located in Versailles, the majestic Kentucky Castle is a premier inn where you can feel like royalty for a night. Although it was built in 1969, you'll still feel like you're escaping Kentucky and entering medieval times.
2. Hang Out with Dinosaurs

3. Explore a Cave by Boat
At Lost River Cave, you'll get to float into a dark cave system and explore by boat. As the only underground boat tour in the state, it's definitely an unexpected find! There are plenty of reasons to love this special spot, here's seven of ours.
4. Spend the Night with Ghosts
We know Kentucky is filled with historic sites, but have you heard of this supposedly haunted excursion? Waverly Hills Sanatorium offers overnight paranormal tours, if you're brave enough!
5. Walk Inside Noah's Ark
Built as a full-size replica of Noah's Ark, the Ark Encounter features a 510 ft. long, 85 ft. wide engineering marvel. Over the years the've expanded to include several fun attractions, including a playground kids of all ages will enjoy.
6. Tour an Actual Coal Mine By Rail Car
At the Portal 31 Exhibition Mine, you can ride a rail car into an old mine, complete with underground animated exhibits.
7. Travel a Different Type of Trail
Yes, Kentucky is famous for its bourbon, but did you know that an actual "trail" has been created that if you follow it, you'll visit ten Kentucky distilleries? 8. Walk Above Sharks
Even though there's not an ocean nearby, you can still visit a few sharks at the Newport Aquarium. They recently added the shark bridge so you can walk along a netted bridge and gaze at the hungry sharks below.
