Did You Know Kansas Is Home To The World’s Largest Ball Of Twine?

The Sunflower State is a quirky place, and we know we're not for everyone. There are plenty of weird places to go in Kansas. One spot that is undoubtedly among the state's most unique attractions is the World's Largest Ball of Twine. You'll find this behemoth in the little city of Cawker City in Mitchell County. The town is immensely proud of its ball of twine, and it's so popular that it even has its own annual celebration. Let's take a peek at this uniquely Kansan spot:

Cawker City is a special little city. It's in central Kansas, right along Waconda Lake, and has a population of about 500.

This town's biggest claim to fame is undoubtedly its massive ball of twine.

Surprisingly enough, there are actually several balls of twine in the United States that claim to be the largest.

Cawker City's is most definitely the largest ball of twine built by a community, and it's actually still growing!

Each year, the community hosts a Twine-a-thon in August, where members of the public are invited to come wrap more twine along the ball.

The ball got its start in 1953, when a single farmer began work on it. Within just a few years, it weighed more than 5,000 pounds!

If you'd like to learn more about the history of the world's largest ball of twine in Kansas, there are some great informative signs all around the gazebo that houses the twine ball.

I find something so heartwarming about this, and it's so representative of the impressive sense of community you can find in our small towns in Kansas.
