We're closing in on the end of the year and, if you're like most people in Indy, you've probably done so many different activities throughout this past year that it's hard to remember them all. Maybe, at this point, you've started to run out of ideas for things to do during these final weeks. You're in luck! We've got some ideas for you. Check out these nine things you never thought about doing in Indianapolis:
1. Tour the City Market Catacombs.
As long as these tunnels have been around, people still don't realize that they're directly under downtown's City Market. If you're up for checking out these creepy catacombs, you can take a guided tour.
2. Explore the Country’s Largest Dr. Who Warehouse.
For Dr. Who lovers out there, head to Who North America, which is the country's largest warehouse attraction based around the popular time-travel show. It's located less than a half hour southwest of the city at 8901 South State Rd. 67, Camby, IN 46113.
3. See the Indiana Medical History Museum.
A monument to the early days of psychiatric medical research, this museum offers a look at over 15,000 items related to medical history from throughout the decades. You can find this museum located on the grounds of Central State Hospital at 3045 W Vermont St., Indianapolis, IN 46222.
4. Marvel at Veal’s Ice Tree.
If it's below freezing, you can head to this bizarre and beautiful tourist attraction. The Ice Tree, which is created by freezing a continuous spray of water from a private pond, forms over a collection of tree branches to form one marvelous and strange formation. Once the chilliest days are upon us, you'll find it at 11333 Southeastern Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46259.
5. Bang some drums at Rhythm! Discovery Center.
Here, you can explore the history of percussion from around the world while also getting your hands on some of these fantastic instruments. It's fun for the whole family!
Rhythm! Discovery Center is located in the Claypool Court Building at 110 W Washington St. A, Indianapolis, IN 46204.
6. Check out the spinning jail cell at the Rotary Jail Museum in Crawfordsville.
At the Rotary Jail Museum, you'll have the opportunity to tour one of the country's three remaining rotating jails. This one was constructed in 1882 and was the first of its kind (and it's the only one that still spins). The jail was closed in 1973, but you can visit the museum for a tour to learn more about the fascinating history.
The Rotary Jail Museum is located at 225 N Washington St., Crawfordsville, IN 47933.
7. Tired of typical museums? Head to the Sideshow Art and Odditorium.
If you’re burnt out on art museums and galleries in the city, why not head to the Odditorium? This one-of-a-kind gallery showcases work from local artist Becky Wilson as well as others, and has some of the smallest and most unusual art in Indianapolis.
Address: 1125 E Brookside Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46201.
8. Explore The Ruins at Holliday Park.
While they're not actual ruins, these structures are an amazing art installation that was created (and recently restored) from salvaged sculptures that were part of a New York skyscraper in the 1900s. Holliday Park also offers a beautiful backdrop a of gardens, a fountain, and brand-new walkways to explore.
Holliday Park is located at 6363 Spring Mill Rd., Indianapolis, IN 4626.
9. Swing dance at Fountain Square Theatre.
On the second and fourth Friday nights of each month, you can enjoy some swing dancing at Fountain Square Theatre in downtown Indy. Things kick off with an hour-long lesson for beginners, followed by three hours of entertainment and music, usually performed by the Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra.
Fountain Square Theatre is located at 1111 Prospect St., Indianapolis, IN 46203.
