Lake Michigan in Illinois offers stunning blue waters and beautiful beaches, best explored by watercraft or walking along the shore.

Obviously located in the Midwest, you wouldn't typically find Illinois notable for having blue waters. But in the shadows of large skyscrapers and a bustling metropolis, Illinois has one of the most beautiful bodies of water in America. We're talking about lovely Lake Michigan. If you haven't taken the time to walk along the lake - or, better yet, get out on the lake in a watercraft - you are truly missing out. It shimmers in the sun, and some days it is so blue that the sky looks muted against it.

One of the 5 great lakes, Lake Michigan shoreline can be found in four states: Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan.

It has a surface area of 22,404 square miles, with 1,576 square miles being in Illinois.

It offers some of the most stunning beaches in the state.

Even during the winter, it looks amazing with a layer of ice over it.

It is best explored by watercraft, whether that's by jet ski, canoe, or even pontoon boat.

But you can get plenty of incredible views simply by walking or jogging alongside it.

It is often seen as the backdrop of the city, but it may just be the other way around.
