Obviously located in the Midwest, you wouldn't typically find Illinois notable for having blue waters. But in the shadows of large skyscrapers and a bustling metropolis, Illinois has one of the most beautiful bodies of water in America. We're talking about lovely Lake Michigan. One of the 5 great lakes, Lake Michigan shoreline can be found in four states: Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan.

It has a surface area of 22,404 square miles, with 1,576 square miles being in Illinois.

It offers some of the most stunning beaches in the state.

Even during the winter, it looks amazing with a layer of ice over it.

It is best explored by watercraft, whether that's by jet ski, canoe, or even pontoon boat.

But you can get plenty of incredible views simply by walking or jogging alongside it.

It is often seen as the backdrop of the city, but it may just be the other way around.
