These 9 Theaters In Hawaii Will Give You An Unforgettable Viewing Experience

Hawaii offers unique and charming movie theaters, ranging from historic venues to outdoor screenings.

Maybe it’s the beautiful weather and plethora of outdoor activities, but Hawaii doesn’t have many movie theaters – and many of them are pretty run-down. But these nine theaters are a cut above the rest, and offer an experience unlike the rest.

1) Movie Museum, Honolulu

No one would expect this little hole in the wall to be a movie theatre, but it is. Reservations are a must – since the theatres are so tiny – but guests can bring their own drinks and snacks. Selections are often obscure – think lots of classics, independent flicks, foreign films, and documentaries.

2) Honokaa People's Theatre, Big Island

This little 525-seat movie house was built in 1930, and while it has struggled to remain afloat in recent decades, it is now a popular spot for locals who want to enjoy a movie without driving into Hilo. The theatre is full of Old Hawaii charm, and the attached café features delicious treats with cinema-related names.

3) Sunset on the Beach, Honolulu

This isn’t a traditional movie theatre – it is instead a 30-foot screen set up at Honolulu’s Kuhio Beach a few times each year for free screenings. There are no events scheduled right now, but check out sunsetonthebeach.net for future events.

4) Palace Theatre, Hilo

A cinema and performing arts venue, the films shown are definitely unique – in the next month they are showing the new Amy Winehouse Documentary, a drama/mystery titled "Irrational Man," and a new documentary which has been in the works for seven years. They also host concerts and musicals.

5) Waimea Theatre, Kauai

Movies tend to come to this theatre a little late (we’re talking two weeks to a few months – but it is a pretty popular spot on Kauai to see a movie, if only because it’s one of two theatres left on the island. The small town establishment has one theatre, and was opened in 1938.

6) Consolidated Ward Stadium

Consistently rated as one of the best movie theatres in Hawaii, Ward has an IMAX

7) The Great 4-D Movie Ride, Big Island

This non-traditional theatre is the first of its kind on the Big Island – featuring short movies, complete with 3D movies, synchronized full-motion seats, impressive sound system, and water and air sprays. Pretty cool, eh?

8) Regal Cinemas Maui Mall Megaplex 12

It’s pretty sad that the highest-rated theatre on Maui only has three stars on Yelp. Is it because movie theatres aren’t necessarily as popular in Hawaii? I don’t think so, but someone must have that opinion, since there are only two theatres on the entire island.

9) Fun Flicks Outdoor Movies, Oahu

So, this isn’t a theatre – but instead a party and event service where anyone can rent a huge screen to host an outdoor event wherever you desire - in a park, on a beach, or even right next to your own swimming pool – as long as there is space for the huge screen!

Which of these is your favorite theatre to enjoy a good movie? Did I miss your favorite spot?
