All it takes is one charming, panoramic drive on Highway 52, through the beautiful Cohutta Wilderness, and you’ll arrive in Fort Mountain State Park. This 3,712-acre nature-wonderland is the perfect place to visit with your family this summer, especially once you make it all the way into the park to the little known lake.
Fort Mountain State Park Lake is HUGE. By huge, we really mean 17 acres of pure glory. The lake is nestled snug in the forested mountains, and is a major draw for families because of all the activities offered. From paddleboating around the clear waters, hiking through any one of the numerous trails, even lounging at the lakeside beach, there’s something for everyone at Fort Mountain State Park.
The lake is also a worthwhile destination even if you’re not partaking in summer activities. In fact, it’s a truly spectacular place each and every season. If you’re adventuring in autumn, you will have the perfect vantage point to watch all the trees changing color. If you’re wandering in winter, then make sure you bring a camera (and a blanket) to snap some beautiful photos of a winter wonderland. No matter what time of year you go, there is always a bit of nature worthy of witnessing firsthand.
If there is one thing we can recommend doing at Fort Mountain State Park Lake, it's camping. There's nothing like pitching your tent, settling in for the weekend, and creating a little slice of heaven right on the water's edge. Bring your whole family, some food to throw on the campfire, and a couple fishing poles to get you through the weekend. Not only will you be able to listen to the sounds of crickets as you fall asleep, but you'll also catch some amazing sunsets and sunrises throughout your camping stay.
