Hike With Llamas At Luna’s Llama Adventures In Northern California
Luna’s Llama Adventures offers unique hiking experiences with llamas in various scenic locations in Humboldt County, California.
There are so many different ways to take a hike these days. Of course, there’s the traditional – just your two feet and the great outdoors. But there are many newfangled hiking adventures offered all across the county with horses, donkeys, goats, and even sheep. If you’re looking for a truly unique hiking experience, then you might try a hike with llamas at Luna’s Llama Adventures.
Luna’s Llama Adventures doesn’t have a set brick-and-mortar location, rather operates from a pasture located between Arcata and Blue Lake in Northern California’s Humboldt County.
You might think that the name of the company is after the moon ("luna" in Spanish). But it’s actually named after the local thousand-year-old redwood tree that was at the center of a clear-cutting practice many years ago. In an effort to save it and the surrounding old-growth forests, an environmental activist lived for two years in Luna’s branches in protest – ultimately saving her.
Llamas make great hiking companions, as they are good pack animals for hikers, backpackers, researchers, photographers, and others.
So what’s the difference between a llama and an alpaca? There are several but the most notable is the type of coat—longer and fine hair for alpacas, and a coarse wool coat for llamas—and their size.
In addition to what they can carry, llamas offer environmental benefits.
They naturally are low impact on trails, and because they are calm animals they don’t disturb the local wildlife.
Luna’s Llama Adventures travels all over the Humboldt County area, offering a variety of ways to hike with llamas.
You’ll find these beautiful creatures in the Arcata Community Forest, Six Rivers National Forest, Humboldt Redwoods State Park, and Manila beaches, just to name a few places.
Who couldn’t love that beautiful face?
Excursions include a Llama Hour Meet & Greet (primarily for young kids), Llama Picnic Hikes, Full-Day Tours, and 2, 3, and 4 day Overnight Guided Llama Treks.
Llamas, believe it or not, are very personable and good with children.
So whether you embark upon your adventure with Tango, Axel, BonBon, Angel, Wyatt, or Reeves, you’ll no doubt agree that a hike with llamas is a memorable experience!
