Every Fall, This Small Town in Arkansas Holds the Most Authentic Scottish Festival in America

Come and celebrate the rich Celtic culture at Arkansas's annual ScotsFest! This incredible fall festival has earned national attention.

Can you remember the first time you heard bagpipes being played? The unmistakable sound of the woodwind instruments is both eerie and enchanting at the same time. It’s certainly fitting for an instrument meant to carry sound through the rollyling hills of Scotland! This music is deeply rooted in Scottish tradition, and perhaps this isn’t something you hear a lot in the Natural State. However, since 1979, the small town of Batesville, Arkansas, has been celebrating music and the rich Celtic culture by hosting the most authentic Scottish festival in America.

This is no ordinary fall festival in Arkansas. In fact, the event is one of the top 10 things to do here, attracting thousands of folks every year. If you have never been to ScotsFest, this year it’s the place to be. So, this fall, grab your kilts (or come as you are), and check out the epic Scottish festival in Arkansas, where we celebrate all the wonderful traditions of Scotland!

Mark your calendars (Oct. 17 - Oct. 19) for the 45th annual Arkansas Scottish Festival, also known as ScotsFest. This year's festival will be held at Lyon College, a liberal arts college in Batesville, and will be bigger and better than ever! As one of the best fall festivals in Arkansas, this Batesville staple takes place amidst the changing season and is the perfect place to immerse yourself in music, dance, and cultural traditions.

Kilts aren't required, but do come prepared to have the best time of your life with students, family, friends, and Lyon College alumni, who will be celebrating Homecoming at the same time. As the most authentic Scottish festival in America, expect pipers, drummers, dancers, athletes, Scottish clans, and vendors who travel from all over the country to attend the event, which has earned national recognition.

As previously mentioned, the festival will be held on the beautiful 136-acre Lyon College campus, which boasts a rich Celtic heritage. Since the event attracts so many people, I'd suggest carving out enough time for parking and walking to the campus. I love it when festivals have something for everyone to enjoy, and ScotsFest doesn't disappoint. In addition to the local vendors and a fun bazaar, the festival will be jam-packed with lots of activities, including parades, music, Highland Games, races, a sheepdog demo, dance classes, and more.

Because this festival is part of the Lyon College homecoming, in addition to Scottish shenanigans, there will be banquets, the homecoming football game, parades, a pep rally, tailgating, and everything in between. Moreover, the little ones will have fun here too. In addition to live entertainment, dancing, and a petting zoo, there will be a kid's zone with bounce houses, face painting, and tons of traditional Scottish games.

Surely, no festival in Arkansas is complete without food vendors, so come hungry and enjoy some traditional Scottish food like meat pies, haggis, and Scottish eggs. There will also be quintessential American favorites, including BBQ, corndogs, funnel cake, and more. Vendors will also sell handmade goods, artwork, and jewelry, and I promise you’ll find something to take home with you.

One of the highlights of the festival will be the clans and bands, where you can enjoy hearing traditional Scottish music. There will also be reenactments of historical battles, plenty of dancing, and even a British car show. With all the events happening at this festival, you’ll need to attend on all three days to fully experience the rich Scottish culture!

The 2025 Arkansas ScotsFest will take place October 17-19. Check out the full schedule, plan your visit, and grab your tickets on the Arkansas ScotsFest website. Be sure to keep an eye on the Scottish festival's official Facebook page for updates, too!
