Most People Have No Idea There’s An Underwater Ghost Town Hiding In Arizona

Alamo Crossing, a ghost town in Arizona, lies submerged beneath Lake Alamo, preserving its haunting history underwater.

Like most of us, you probably heard the story of Atlantis as a child. While your innocent mind may have believed it back then, chances are you’ve written it off as nothing more than a tall tale in adulthood. But what if we told you Arizona has its very own sunken city?

The town of Alamo Crossing, Arizona was completely wiped off the map in 1968 when the entire city was submerged as Lake Alamo was filled. Today, the town sits fully intact and underwater, slowly succumbing to the passing of time and the elements.

Alamo Crossing - or what was once Alamo Crossing - is located just three hours northwest of Phoenix. You’d never guess that the lovely Lake Alamo is harboring such a hauntingly fascinating secret. Beneath its ordinary-looking water, a ghost town remains completely untouched.

The town was established sometime in the late 1800s and was small even by ghost town standards. There was a post office and a handful of shops, but not much else. Eventually, residents moved elsewhere and the town was abandoned in 1918.

Alamo Crossing was left to decay for 50 years, and when the Bill Williams River was dammed in 1968, the community became submerged underneath 80 feet of water.

The next time you visit Lake Alamo and find yourself fishing, just imagine the tiny, intact ghost town lurking deep below. Who knows - the water just might be haunted by any unfortunate souls who weren't lucky enough to make it out before the flood.
