This Walkable Stretch of Shops and Restaurants in Small-Town Alaska Is the Perfect Day Trip Destination
Discover the charming, walkable downtown of Seward, where local shops, restaurants, and coastal views make for the perfect small-town day trip.
Alaska has some charming small towns, but there is one destination that makes for the ultimate day trip—especially if you love shopping! Seward, Alaska, is blessed with incredible mountain views, a beautiful bay, and many restaurants and shops, all located downtown. There's even the Alaska SeaLife Center to visit during your adventure! Put on your walking shoes because this is a charming day trip destination, and a place you don't want to overlook on your next outing.

There's a tiny town right on Resurrection Bay that offers some of the biggest charms in the state—it is even one of the most walkable small towns in Alaska. Seward's downtown is laid out right on the water, offering incredible views of the bay, mountains, and more, all from your table at a restaurant or from your favorite shop's window.
Downtown Seward is a mile of orderly streets filled with fabulous shops. You'll find independent bookstores, fabulous Greek restaurants, and even a mouthwatering taco joint. There are also coffee shops, bars, and a gym all within walking distance of each other.

One of our favorite things about downtown Seward is all of the colorful murals covering the buildings. You’ll find masterpieces of all sizes that offer insights into the area's history and culture. In fact, Seward is actually nicknamed the “Mural Capital of Alaska,” and after some time spent walking the downtown area, you’ll quickly see why.
One of the most popular places to visit in downtown Seward is the Alaska SeaLife Center. This is one of the best public aquariums in Alaska and is home to all kinds of incredible wildlife, from sea lions to puffins. Of course, even just walking along the waterfront and harbor, you can also catch a glimpse of wildlife like sea otters and eagles.

The original Mile 0 of the Iditarod Trail starts right at the end of downtown on the water. If you wish to learn even more, plan a visit to the Seward Museum.
As we mentioned previously, there are plenty of fascinating things to see at the harbor and waterfront. Here, you'll find even more excellent shopping and restaurants. There are hotels and coffee shops nearby, too! You can also book a boat tour at the boat harbor if you wish to head out into the water and explore a little more.
Whether you're looking for a whale watch experience, a glacier cruise, or a quick boat taxi ride across the bay, the boat harbor offers plenty to do. Walk the docks and see if you can't spy some jellyfish floating along the water.
If you have a chance to do a day (or weekend!) trip to Seward, don't miss out. This postcard-worthy small town is full of fun. And the best part?
